Lasik improves UCVA at expense of BCVA
Unfortunately, many of the LASIK "shops" continue to advertise that
patients---no, customers---can "throw away their glassses and contacts".
More than disengenuous, it's a lie. As YOU have come to realize, LASIK
"may" reduce one's dependancy on glasses or contacts, but the
surgerically alterted eyes will very likely still need optical
correction for distance (sometimes) and near (if you're over 45, all the
time). And, for now at least, *no one* sees better post LASIK than they
could before with optimized optical correction with glasses or contacts.
In fact, a significant number of patients actually have decreased best
corrected acuity after LASIK.
Nevertheless, a realistic expectation of what LASIK can do, tempered
with the knowledge that, 3% (really bad life-altering outcome) -20%
(significantly poor outcome) of the time something goes wrong---people
can have a very positive result and great enjoyment with their "new"
vision and resulting lifestyle changes.
There are many happy post-LASIK people out there and, sadly, many people
hiding behind a mask of denial and depression
