Re: Welcome everyone! Introduce yourself!
hi, i'm new here.
I'm from Brazil, and i like to make contact per net with people around the world.
I have myopia too and wear glasses since my 5. bithday.
left eye -8,50 (and some astigmatism) - my "good" eye
right eye -7,50 (and very much astigmatism) - my "bad" eye.
i haven't idea how is my vision's grade whithout/with glasses in terms of Snellen percentuals (x/200, etc). I have ever had poor sight, since i was a kid. I'm curious to know how good/bad my vision really is in terms of "official" numbers.
Greetings,
RTS

Re: Welcome everyone! Introduce yourself!
A big greeting to you sir! The infomation is incomplete but I can give you an estimate. First we need to convert your pescription to spherical equivalent. Your -8.5 eye is your "good" eye so you probably see better thru that eye. Lets assume It has -1.5 diopters astigmastim. It blurs as much as -.75 myopia. Therfore -9.25 spherical equivalent. Now lets say you correct to 20/30 with glasses due to minification and astigmastim. This would be closer to 20/25 compenstating for minification. Take a -.5 diopter penelity for your BCVA. Now we have -9.75 which would correlate to 20/1200. My diopter chart shows a myopia error of up to -10 still being 20/1200 corrected to 20/20 compenstating for minification. This means if you only see 20/25 with glasses, its because of minification and youd be 20/20 with contacts anyway. If your astigmastim is higher than I think and/or your BCVA worse than 20/30 with glasses, you may be closer to 20/1600 than 20/1200. Either way thats some pretty bad vision due to high myopia!

Re: Welcome everyone! Introduce yourself!
hy miope 5
thank you very much for your expanation. i checked my actual astigmatism values, that's 1,75 left and 3,00 right. As you see, very complicated assymetric eyes. I used contacts in my adolescence, but developped a strong intolerance, so i have to wear glasses anyway. And you're right: when i have to see something better with or whithout glasses, my prefered eye is the left one. My vision with the right eye is allways blurred with or without glasses. I also have problems with night vision, in both eyes, and floaters, but i have luck since i haven't real signs of degenerative myopia until now.
I'm from a generation of nearsighted children in Brazil who received bifocal lenses since the earlier prescriptions, if i remember; they thinked this would prevent the myopia progression in children, specially for kids with "strong tendence" to divergent strabismus, as the doctor thinked i was, because my right eye "wandered" sometimes when i was very tired. This don't happens since my adolescence. Now i think if this wouldn' have influence in my eyes problems, from the good or the bad side. I really have no idea about this. It's really astonishing to see how few people really know about myopia, including strong nearsighted people herselves, and including foruns in the net. So thank you for your qualified space in the internet.
Greetings,
RTS

Re: Welcome everyone! Introduce yourself!
Do you have any idea how well you see with glasses in each eye? Whats your BCVA or best corrected vision? Mines 20/30+ in the better eye and 20/30 in the worse. Bifocals was a smart idea to reduce the progression of myopia. Hope your still wearing bifocals to make it easier to see from near and also slow your myopia. I could never tolerate contacts well either. Have you heard of lasik laser surgry? Do you know anyone that got it? If your interested in it, post about it in my lasik forum. Theres much to learn about it and its risks.

Re: Welcome everyone! Introduce yourself!
hi,
i know 3 or 4 people who performed myopia surgery, all in the range 4-5 dioptries, and they are ok, but i never considered to make this because my chance to really increase vision would be in the left eye, my better eye, and if something goes wrong i would have to survive with my right eye who has something called "irregular astigmatismus" if i remenber. So i remain with my glasses. I don't know how is my best corrected vision, but surely isn't 100%. I stopped to use bifocals when i changed eyedoctor when i was 12. As child i also suffered with another "mode", the socalled undercorrection, to try to improve my vision, until the new doctor prescribed the best correction possible.
I will check your lasik forum. Do you know other serious high myopia foruns? Thanks.

Re: Welcome everyone! Introduce yourself!
You are right. Lasik isnt in your best interest. It will help reduce your dependancy on glasses but you have a difficult pescription and if you lose any vision, youll be in trouble. Are your eyes still getting worse? As for finding out how well you see with glasses, theres eyecharts you can print out found online. Check my myopia's corner and post there with any questions you have
