near work causes accelerated myopia progression

Let me contribute. Its the amount of near work and how often you wear the evil minus lens that determines how myopia youll be. Genes play a factor, but environment is the trigger for myopia progression.

Take my brother for example, he just never embraced the evil minus lens and still doesnt to this day except for driving and occasionally to see the board. He studies alot but his -1.25 myopia makes near work almost effortless. His eyes enlongated a little in response to near work. Wearing the evil minus lens would trick the eyes into thinking they arent myopic and the strain of near work would make them enlongate further. The worst thing you can do is not take your glasses off for near work if you can see fine without glasses for near. If you are too myopic, you can wear a weaker pair for near work or consider progressives.

My sister and I embraced the evil minus lens and sometimes forgot to take them off for near work. My sister often leaves her contacts in all day, even when studying. Her eyes as a result are getting worse. Mine stopped getting worse and got a diopter better when I first started on the undercorrection regime and always making sure to take my glasses off for near work and even doing eye exercises while doing near work.

Genes may have been responsable for our myopia, but the environment determines how MUCH myopia youll have. People who know how to take care of their eyes usually dont progress beyond -2 while those who dont can get to -6 or worse!

My mom used to be something like a -4.5 when she started college but all the near work and not removing her glasses for that caused her myopia to escalate half a diopter a year. She became -6.5 after 4 years college. Many college students make their eyes worse during this period. I took great care to make mine better with good vision habits!
